Fafiki's Story: When a Thread Becomes Freedom

The Fafiki brand was born from a silent rebellion.

For over 10 years, I managed international shipping. I left home at 6:30 in the morning and returned home at 8:30 at night, immersed in a world of impossible deadlines, lies, and compromises. I was a manager in a system that exploited drivers and consumed me. But I never stopped dreaming of something greater, almost as if a part of me knew I deserved more.

Then I became a mother, and everything changed.

After just three months of maternity leave, I had to return to the office. The day my daughter said "Mommy" for the first time—looking at her babysitter—something inside me broke. I asked myself: what's the point of all this?

One evening, frustrated and tired, I found my old crochet needles. My grandmother had given them to me when I was five, teaching me a very complicated project: two five-fingered gloves. I still remember her patient hands guiding mine, that silent dialogue of knots and threads.

I started creating again, first to calm my nerves, then to find myself. I undid each piece after I finished it—I didn't have the courage to believe they could be worth anything. I felt wasted, but I kept going.

Until a friend of mine, allergic to all metals, asked me for help. I created a completely braided necklace for her, with no metal components. When she put it on, her eyes lit up: it was the first time she could wear jewelry without pain.

It was then that I realized: I could turn that passion into something real.

Some time later, I took courage. I invested in real materials—Baltic amber from my native Poland, crystals, precious stones—and stopped taking my pieces apart. A customer ordered nine pieces of jewelry from me for her niece's first communion. She wrote, "I want to look beautiful in your jewelry." I was moved. Jewelry after jewelry, I began to build a small network of customers who came back to me again and again.

Even my friends and relatives in Poland, during my annual visits, started asking me for unique pieces. It almost seemed unreal.

Today, in my studio, every time I start creating, I never know what will come of it—I lose myself completely, disconnect from the world, and when I "return," I find something in my hands I never even imagined. It's pure joy.

I called this project Fafiki – in Polish it means "a dog without a breed, a mongrel." My mother suggested this name ironically, when I couldn't find a suitable name for my project and was taking too long to do so, with all the good names already taken: "What the hell are you doing, two fafikis walking down the street... you'll see, he'll be free!" I was struck by that word, full of humility and simplicity. Like my jewelry: no labels, no trends to follow. Just authenticity.

Every piece I create is designed for women who, like me, have given up too much and now want to reclaim their beauty, their uniqueness. Women who don't look for jewelry to show off, but to finally feel like themselves.
