What is amber? Where does amber come from?

Amber is nothing more than the resin of coniferous trees. About 60 varieties of amber are known worldwide. Amber can be transparent, translucent, and opaque, offering a variety of shades of yellow, red, brown, and beige, but also white, blue, and greenish, sometimes creating unique mosaics.

Where does amber come from in the sea?
Baltic amber was created from the processed resin of conifers, which grew in the Middle Paleogene, about 40 million years ago, on the northern and eastern coasts of the epicontinental sea filling the eastern part of the North Sea basin.

Why was amber called the gold of the north?
Amber was called "northern gold" because merchants from southern Europe would collect it north from the Polish Baltic coast. (I personally had the opportunity to participate in amber extraction from the sea immediately after a storm as a child; this experience will remain forever in my memory.) Amber was the most valuable raw material sold in northern Europe.
